What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving when brands apply big discounts on their products. The phenomenon originated in the US and the term was coined by the Philadelphia Police Department in the 1950s to describe the mayhem caused by shoppers on this day. Unsurprisingly, retailers didn't like the negative connotation of the phrase. But instead of coming up with another term, they started using the name 'Black Friday' to mean something positive – big discounts for shoppers and a very profitable day for retailing and the economy.

What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is the biggest online shopping day of the year. The term was coined by the National Retail Federation in 2005 to describe the Monday after Thanksgiving, when people continued to shop online after returning to work. While Black Friday is better for electronics, Cyber Monday is larger for fashion retail.

When are Black Friday 2017 and Cyber Monday 2017?

Black Friday follows Thanksgiving, which is always the fourth Thursday in November. So in 2017, Black Friday falls on 24 November.

Cyber Monday is the first Monday after Thanksgiving, which makes this year's CM the 27th of November.

But what used to be a one-day holiday for in-store doorbusters is now a weeks-long shopping spree. Many shops start offering Black Friday deals a full week (or more) before Thanksgiving right up to the following Tuesday.
